City Mourns Earl Cameron and Makes Condolence Book Available 

Hamilton – July 6, 2020

The City of Hamilton sends its heartfelt condolences to the Cameron family and friends on the recent passing of Earl Cameron CBE. In June of 2012, the Corporation of Hamilton passed a resolution to rename the City Hall theatre after Mr. Cameron in recognition of his contribution to the arts. The resolution was a unanimous one and in October 2012, Mr. Cameron and his wife were flown to the island to preside over the official renaming celebration.

City of Hamilton COO, Dwayne Caines, said, “Mr. Cameron was an international trail blazer and a proud son of Bermuda’s soil.  He will go down in the pantheon of the world’s great actors for creating a path that many people today still use.  Many have trod that path laid by Mr. Cameron, particularly actors of color, and sadly, many do not know or fully understand the sacrifices that were made."

Mr. Cameron led the definitive story of success over struggle. He fought and flourished in a time when the cololur of his skin worked against him, but that never stopped him from pursuing his career choice, gaining the admiration of adoring fans and fellow actors and ultimately having his achievements recognized by the Queen.

Mr. Caines added, “The City is honoured to carry on his name. The theatre will always be a reflection of the man who rose above and defeated the odds. I add my personal condolences to his family here in Bermuda and abroad and to those countless lives that he touched through his story and impressive body of work.”

The City will make a condolence book available, as of Wednesday, at City Hall for the public to share fond memories and words of comfort.
