City of Hamilton Gives Back to City Nursery Schools

Hamilton – November 19th, 2021

As we enter the Season of Giving, the City of Hamilton is thankful to be able to assist the community through its pre-holiday Community Give Back Initiative which took place this week.

On November 18 and 19 the City provided charitable services to two nursery schools located within the City – Flying Start Nursery School on Cedar Avenue and Kiddie Academy on Laffan Street.  At both locations City staff carried out remedial work to the nursery schools’ playground equipment.

The City’s Social Committee Chair Ms Lorna Hayward said, “The City’s CEO Mr. Dwayne Caines tasked the Social Committee to come up with ideas for a City staff Community Give Back Initiative where we would apply our ‘Sweat Equity’ to assist a deserving organization in the City.  After much discussion, the Social Committee members decided to offer our assistance to the nursery schools in the City.”

The City’s Operations Manager Mr. Allan Somner detailed the work which was undertaken by his team this week, “At Kiddie Academy, City staff removed an old, metal playset which was in poor condition. This work included the removal of all of the old concrete pads in which the playset was secured, using jack hammers and hand tools to dig up any remaining debris. This was performed by a team of four from the engineering department. After this was completed, the Parks team members put down fresh soil and grass seeds to complete the work, providing the students with a bigger, grassed playing space. Additionally, there was a wooden playset which required a little ‘TLC’ and our in-house carpenter carried out the remedial work in this regard.

“At Flying Start Nursery, the City’s carpenter made minor repairs to a wooden playset and the nursery office was given a fresh coat of paint by our in-house painter.”

Owner of Flying Start Nursery School Ltd. Liz Tatem said, “Flying Start Nursery school would like to sincerely thank the City of Hamilton for including us in their Community Give Back Initiative. This last year and a half has hit many small businesses hard and jobs that previously we could complete all at once have now been prioritized. Their kind offer to help with yard repairs and inside painting is very much appreciated.”

Owner/Operator of Kiddie Academy Sharon DeSilva said,Kiddie Academy staff and students would like to thank the City of Hamilton for choosing them as one of the recipients of their Community Give Back Initiative. Special thanks to all the hard-working City staff members who volunteered their time and effort and worked so diligently to help to make our playground safe again. I know that this was no easy task for these men; this was a huge piece of equipment that had been cemented into the ground, hence our need for assistance in removing it. We are sad to see it go, but it has seen better days and has served its purpose well.

“This couldn’t have come at a better time. We had just been discussing the need to remove the playground equipment during our last staff meeting, and within a matter of days I received a letter from the City of Hamilton, offering their help. We cannot thank them enough for the help that they provided for us, during our time of need. This was a true blessing!”
