City Reminds Dog Owners to Pick Up After Their Pet

Hamilton – May 7th, 2024

The City of Hamilton is reminding dog owners to please pick up after your pet should they defecate in the City.

It is an offence under the Dogs Act 2008 not to clean up after your dog, and offenders will be liable to fines.

Subject to subsections (3) and (4) of the Dogs Act 2008, a dog owner commits an offence if their dog… “deposits faeces on property other than property of the keeper and the person fails to collect the faeces and dispose of it in a reasonable manner; or repeatedly soils, with urine or faeces, property of, or under the care of, another person without that person’s consent.”

City CEO Dwayne Caines said, “Hamilton is a vibrant community where people live, work, and visit. It's therefore disheartening when we hear reports of people’s encounters with dog waste on our streets. Not only does it create an unsightly and unpleasant environment, but it also poses health risks to our residents and visitors. As stewards of our city's cleanliness and safety, we're taking proactive measures, including the use of CCTV for monitoring and enforcement. Let's work together to keep Hamilton clean and enjoyable for everyone."

The City appreciates the public’s assistance in this matter.
